About the role

Your role is to carry out thesis work on: "Consistency, Security and Supervision in a micro-service stateless Data Centric architecture"

·         Global context and problematic of the subject

The rate at which system requirements change exceeds the COTS product release cycle. Some industries (GAFA, …) have successfully responded to these challenges by moving key business capabilities from COTS to P/SaaS packages breaking down monolithic applications into micro-services. Today, this proven approach to cutting into micro-services is gradually extending to the telecommunications industry. This one, in full mutation, must also meet increasingly strict requirements (latency time, speeds, etc.) to provide advanced services: V2X, Industry 4.0, Smart cities, etc. One of the key points in the success of this metamorphosis concerns the efficiency of the management of procedures and its data (access, modification, transmission, etc.) to provide multiple services, quickly, taking into account specific constraints (very high speed, “real time” service, etc.).

·         Scientific objective – results and obstacles to overcome

The thesis aims to study and define a Data Centric architecture in stateless micro-services involving specific management of processes and data that will be distributed in heterogeneous databases also shared with third parties (slicing in roaming, etc.) Indeed, the data-centric model makes it possible to effectively manage resilience in networks and the freedom and flexibility obtained by micro-services make it possible to introduce technological innovations gradually.

Locks:

The microservices architecture in telecommunications brings its own (new) complications, and the complexity of a large application does not disappear simply because it is reduced to a set of relatively simple components. One of the main problems lies in the “CAP” theorem, stating that it is almost impossible to achieve strong data consistency in a stateless micro-service environment prone to network failures without compromising the availability of this same data. There is therefore no technical model for managing distributed data that simultaneously achieves: reliability/consistency + failure mgt + speed of access. It will be necessary to study the technological alternatives (AI, Deep learning, quantum computing, etc.) to help implement these new Data-centric architectures in micro-services without compromising the reliability of the data associated with the new services.

About you

·         Skills (scientific and technical) and personal qualities required by the position

The skills sought are in-depth knowledge of distributed architecture or cloud / microservices architecture. Knowledge of data analytics and/or quantum computing can be important elements to be able to carry out the research thesis. In addition, autonomy, curiosity, and open-mindedness will be particularly appreciated for this research work. English will be predominant throughout the thesis, both in reading (state of the art), in writing (writing articles) and speaking (presentation of results at international conferences). A good level is therefore also desired.

·         Required training (master, engineering degree, doctorate, …)

The candidate must be a graduate of an engineering school or hold a Research Master's degree in at least one of the following fields:

  • Distributed architecture / distributed systems

  • Cloud microservice architectures

  • Data scientist (AI, deep learning, …)

  • Quantum Programming

·         Desired experiences (internships, …)

An internship in one of the above fields would be highly appreciated

The doctoral student will have the opportunity to participate in collaborative projects at European and global level, particularly around the conceptualization and standardization of future 5G+/6G networks. This thesis could be in high visibility at the international level since it should make it possible to define innovative solutions that can be proposed to feed the reflections on the conceptualization of future 5G+/6G networks.
