This PhD position is in the framework of the "MecaFlux" collaborative project with Sorbonne Université. The experiment is being developed in their group, with the aim to achieve unprecedented control precision, at the quantum level, of a mechanical oscillator. This PhD is meant to analyze the dynamics of this system coupled to superconducting circuits in view of its stabilization and control. A more prospective part of the work could look into particular phenomena which should be observable on such system, among which quantum gravity effects as announced in the project outline.


The thesis will take place under supervision of Alain Sarlette (inria QUANTIC), in collaboration with the other members of the MecaFlux project (Samuel Deléglise project head; Zaki Leghtas (inria QUANTIC); ...)

The PhD student will participate in all the activites of the QUANTIC lab: seminars, scientific discussions,...  A side project of research could be proposed within the group, depending on preferences and progress.

The research results will be presented at national and international conferences and reported in scientific publications.

Main activities

Main :

  • Analyze the mathematical model of the experiment which is currently being calibrated
  • Propose solutions to stabilize and control it, towards generating "interesting" quantum states of the mechanical oscillator
  • Simulate the behavior of the system, test various solutions and the effect of parameters
  • Communicate the results to the scientific community (conferences, articles)


  • Participate in the group seminar and scientific discussions
  • Possibly a side project, for instance studying 'interesting" phenomena to showcase on the experiment; or other project within the research group


Essential: basic knowledge of quantum mechanics models, studying dynamical systems, their computer simulation

Languages : english

Relational skills : being able to make the link between experimental physicists and mathematical models (to be developed)

Other valued appreciated : good written and oral reporting of results
